I am in college studying a health science and wonder why these people walk around on campus all the time in their uniform. These are the same clothes they are around sick and/or dead, the elderly and the injured. Sure enough, I see these people around the produce at the market, in line at the bank and chilling over the buffet salad bar on their lunch break. You never see doctors wearing their coats while walking their dogs. You don’t see EMTs doing this either…unless they are actually in those places pushing someone into an ambulance. The weirdest part is I see no shortage of these people while there might be 2 hospitals in a 30 mile radius. Is it just a status thing to them?
Just a legit question about people who might be spreading germs and disease in the clothes they are so proud of.

You are EXACTLY right. I think that you should not wear your scrubs outside as a nurse… or doctor or anyone else in that type of profession. However, I think the real problem is spreading germs to the health-compromised patients (Think C-dificile or MRSA)… The average person with a healthy immune system is not likely going to contract anything from some nurse’s scrubs.
That being said, I still really don’t think they should wear them in public….it makes me cringe everytime.
The cute little uniforms usually belong to medical office personnel or, those training to be medical office personnel. I worked for such a training school and the girls were required to wear their uniforms. I know that if they work in medical front offices they don’t have time or the room for the girls to arrive in street clothes and change. Legitimately, can you tell me somewhere other than your imagination that someone has gotten a germ from a nurses uniform? I think you have a far worse problem from people who don’t wash their hands before or after entering a restaurant.
Maybe they are “on call” or between work hours. Usually people who wear scrubs spray their scrubs with a sanitizer when they go out or between patients, so they are actually pretty clean.
But it does seem a bit odd.
They are comfy though. And sometimes people want to run errands before they go home after work. Do you do things in your work clothes? I think you do silly, so its the same.
So they’re supposed to bring their work clothes to work and change out of their street clothes one they’re there and back in when they leave? And they should be changing into street clothes and then back into work clothes at the beginning and end of their lunch hour? Not too unreasonable.
As for the students, is there any chance it is a class requirement?
Not every nurse works in an environment that would expose her to germs outside the norm. Some work in doctors office, ped, OB/GYN, physical therapist, speeh therapist…and being that scrubs can be purchased at wal-mart…the people you see many not even work in the medical field.
I never thought about the germ angle….yuck. I just always assumed that is was because nurses worked such long shifts, it was easier for them to go to the store, etc, before going home to relax. So….Thanks alot for giving me something new to worry about!!! Just kidding, it’s an excellent question.
what do you working? why do you wear your work close in public? Not all nurses get dirty. plus I like it when they walk i love nurses they are hot just a pull on a string and a down they come.
idk, maybe b/c they don’t feel like changing prolly. I have to admit some of them are cute, like the cartoon ones, ex. Pooh, mickey mouse, etc.
I’d say because they are on a lunch break or just got off work and are stopping off on the way home. Their schedules are hectic, give em a break.
Well they’re students genius
They are really comfy you should be some and see how it feels
because they are gay,lesbians
it is very comfortable, I hear.
they think its cool
I understand your concern but the doctors wear their shirt inside and outside. The difference is they wear a coat inside but still they can carry germs or something because they don’t button their shirt. I think it will be a waste of time for them to change clothes before entering and living the hospital. Imagine a hospital with 1 big dressing room for all the staff. They have been doing it for a long time and I guess they found out that it’s not that bad. If they started having a dressing room then they should start having a sanitizing shower and wear Intel Suits when treating the patient. Do you like your nurses and doctors to treat you like you are quaratined on a hot zone?
very interesting question.
I assume it has something to do with some of the people not having the opportunity to change into regular clothes before leaving work.
But you may be on the right track with the status thing, They may have the option to change and choose not too. I guess one theory could be that scrubs are very cheap clothing so they certainly don’t have to worry about getting them ruined or dirty.(i.e. they’re very replacable)
Also, firefighters obviously aren’t going to wear a heavy, thick fire shield of clothing to go run their errands, they’d be exhausted lugging around those clothes all day, whereas scrubs are very light and comfy.
