Why Are The Uniforms Of Nurses And Doctors Called Scrubs?

As the first answer says scrubs are what doctors and nurses wear in the operating theatre. I guess they are called that as both are required to ‘scrub’ themselves clean before entering the theatre to prevent disease and contamination.

Why Are The Nursing Uniforms Called Scrubs?

To expand on the other answers, the name comes from the act of “scrubbing in” prior to surgery, which involves changing into a clean surgical outfit (aka scrubs), meticulously washing the hands and arms (“scrubbing”), and then walking into the OR to put on a sterile gown and gloves prior to the surgery.
Nurses had not worn scrubs traditionally until the last 20 or so years, since the classic nursing uniform was the all white uniform that is now only seen in Halloween costumes…

Anyone Know Why A Nurse’s Uniform Is Commonly Called A “scrub”?

Just out of curiousity. During visits to the doctor and while waiting in the lobby, more often than not you have nurses who are chatterboxes. I’ve heard them refer to their uniforms as “scrubs” when complimenting on the cute little patterns or designs on their clothing. I’ve seen it on TV, too, while watching drama shows like E.R. or Grey’s Anatomy. So…why?
