Math errors in nursing result in medication errors, as this is generally the only area in wich you use more than the most basic math (calculating dosages, medications based on body-mass-indexes, etc). Look up some of the legal implications of medication errors… prison sentences dues to negligence. Regardless of anything the doctor prescribed or the pharmacy provided, giving the WRONG med or the WRONG dosage lays solely on the shoulders of the nurse who administered it. You really need to know how to calculate and convert different measurement systems as well as figure out IV flow rates, etc. Also very important for monitoring intake and output….
