Nurses That Take Care Of Babies In Hospitals?

Date: 19 Aug 2009 Comments: 2 so far

I’m planning on going to 4year college to get a bachelors degree in nursing.
What do you need to become a Neonatal nurse? I think that would be a really fun job and I love babies! I’m definately going to become an RN but is there anything more you need?

You would need to work in the NICU to take care of the babies. That doesn’t take any special training…However, you can specialize and become a neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP), which is a higher degree than a regular RN. I would suggest job shadowing someone who works in the NICU before making this decision, especially because you say it would be “fun”. This is a very high stress job and the babies are not cute and cuddly they are very critically ill. I thought this was the job path I wanted to follow but after shadowing someone and volunteering at a hospital in the nursery I found out that it is actually VERY boring. But hey, it might be exactly what you are looking for…but I would definitely suggest checking it out.

RN is a nurse. RN’s can work in any department of the hospital.
