Okay, I’m an LPN. Every payday friday is Casual Friday. When one of our CNA’s (who is black) ask our DON (who is white) can we wear our Obama shirts on Casual Friday. She said she doesn’t think that is a good idea. I plan on wearing my shirt. I really don’t care what she says. Nobody said anything when their were wearing their McCain buttons around the building. Is there any type of law that said I can’t wear my Obama shirt to work on Casual Friday?

There’s the law of practicality. I wouldn’t do it.
you would already know the rules of what you can and can not wear, add into the fact that this question has been asked of a senior worker and you KNOW they where told it might not be a good idea and you still want to push the point.
You do have a reason when the badge’s where allowed [personally am amazed at that] where I work NO slogans / logos etc for ANY ONE is allowed so unless you did not see ONE obama button you might have a reasonable case of them being unfair. But I would say it is a fairly safe bet you and many others also wore obama buttons.
If you openly go against the “advice” which is what it was not a directive then please don’t be too surprised if you get fired at some point down the road.
You’re confusing law with workplace policy. An employer absolutely has the right to limit or prohibit political speech in the workplace.
.
Personally, I’m with your supervisor. The workplace is no place for political discourse. It leads to tension and lots of time and energy spent on non-work activities.
Since nurses are pretty much guaranteed a job, you *could* make an issue out of it knowing you can probably find another job. Is it worth it? Depends.
I would never take your case. Sorry
No, this is not a legal issue. Your employer, however, sets dress code. If you refuse to obey the dress code, you can (in most states) be fired.
That said, even if you won’t be fired, it’s a bad idea to bring politics like this into the workplace. People feel very strongly about stuff like this and people will treat you differently based on what they think about President-Elect Obama.
why risk provoking the bastards?
the law may well be on your side; but what a hassle you face in trying to get it enforced, if you find yourself the target for bullies or snides who have the influence to cause you grief.
you would be wiser to preserve your ability to live by your beliefs in a subtler way and give cause for others to follow your example or attitude by rational argument rather than render yourself vulnerable just for wearing a piece of harmless advertising!
It may be “Casual Friday”, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to adhere to dress codes agreed upon before employment in your employee policies or hand book.
My company policy broadly states that you can’t wear anythign that would offend anyone else, as well as no visible name brands, symbols or characters….I’m pretty sure this would include political wear…
Theres no law saying that you cant and if they say something about it point out that ppl have worn McCain buttons and it will just make them seem racist if they try to do anything about it and if they fire you, then you can make it a legal matter.
Hope I helped :-]
No, but your employer can make whatever rules they like regarding dress in the office. There’s no specific law about it, as long as the rules apply to everyone. So if they say no-one can wear Obama shirts, that’s the rule.
there is not a law, there might be regulations at your work. the only thing i can say, is why would you want to stir things up at work? i have heard never talk about religion, money, or politics with friends… i think it’ applies just as well with coworkers
I can think of no law, but probably a violation of “proper etiquette in the workplace”.
WHY would you want to possibly upset 50% of the people you service?
You need to look at the dress code for your hospital. But if your dress creates a hostile environment I would not wear it. Personally I would look for ways to fire your incentive ignorant asss.
No law; just have to worry about your employer’s dress code on political statements in dress code.
There is no law against wearing Obama t-shirts.
i see people do it all the time
Wear it .. Obama! Obama!
Black panthers!
Lmao
It is illegal to wear Obama shirts.
