Math errors in nursing result in medication errors, as this is generally the only area in wich you use more than the most basic math (calculating dosages, medications based on body-mass-indexes, etc). Look up some of the legal implications of medication errors… prison sentences dues to negligence. Regardless of anything the doctor prescribed or the pharmacy provided, giving the WRONG med or the WRONG dosage lays solely on the shoulders of the nurse who administered it. You really need to know how to calculate and convert different measurement systems as well as figure out IV flow rates, etc. Also very important for monitoring intake and output….

Sometimes we run across people whose only teacher can be failure. If you’ve told this person that math is important to know, then there’s not much else you can do. I would try to avoid worrying about it, since – as an adult student in college – he/she will eventually learn that math is important and will either finally take math seriously or will leave the path toward nursing in favor of a career that won’t rely so heavily on math.
Simple. Give them plenty of examples where math is used in nursing. They can’t argue with facts.
over charge them for the classes
