Does Anyone Know The Answer To This?

Yesterday I went to the doctor and I had to have some blood work done. But when the nurse stuck the needle into my arm she did not get any blood at all to come out (lol) She tried moving the needle over and still nothing. She tapped on my skin and she couldnt seem to get any blood. She tried the other arm and still nothing. My friend had told me that I need more water but I dont know if that is true. So does anyone know the real answer to this problem?
I know I should have asked my doctor but he went on lunch break before I could so can anyone answer this?

  1. Don’t worry. The nurse was only having trouble finding veins in your arms. It happens, and it’s nothing to get upset over. It’s possible that the nurse is a novice, and isn’t as “good” finding veins as seasoned nurses are. Or, you could have just been a tricky patient. If you still have concerns, talk to your doctor.

  2. hey that has happened to me be for and let me tell ya the reason she couldn,t get no blood is be cause she missed your vain and i know that hurt the nurse did that to me and i would not let her stick me a gain when you go back ask for some one eles to do it and to try the other arm

  3. Scenic Point

i have this same problem ever time i have blood drawn. genetics determines the size of our veins. just as there are those whose veins are readily seen or, lie right under the skin or, those who have varicose veins, ours are small and were hidden.
it doesn’t hurt to drink a lot of water before giving blood so that you will be well hydrated and perhaps, make it easier, but it really won’t solve the problem on a whole.
good news – we will never have to worry about varicose veins.

  4. Did she stick the needle in your vein?

  5. Loving life

You really must be bashfully shy. You could’ve asked the nurse… Learn to ask questions and speak up for yourself!

  6. This is ridiculous… she might be sticking it the wrong way or you have serious dislocation of blood vessels… it is however impossible for blood not to trickle down… the needle maybe, but my guess is “fire the nurse”

  7. The person attempting to draw blood was probably a medical technician, not a nurse..few docs hire nurses for their offices anymore…and the reson she did not get any blood is that she did not enter a vein. You can be dehydrated, and still if the needle enters the vein, blood will flow. She either was not very skilled or your veins are difficult to find.

  8. You should have requested someone else to take your blood. Not all nurses or interns are pros….

  9. The overwhelming reason this happens is in fact dehydration, even if you don’t think you’re low. Guzzle some Gatorade or similar electrolytic drink a few hours before the next attempt, and see if your veins don’t plump up a little… It is remotely possible she missed both veins, but veeeeeeery unlikely. You can usually feel it when the needle you’re advancing pops into the vein… If she went clear through the vein, you would have been able to see the results quickly… Dehydration wins…
Although I really did like the suggestion that you might actually be dead… Has sunlight been causing you any searing pain and/or partial disintegration lately?

  10. NOTHING is wrong with you. It’s the nurse, not you. I bet another nurse would get blood in a second. Some people have veins which are hard to find with a needle, but a good nurse will do it. I’m a former paramedic and had this problem many times.

  11. You just have deep veins. Or, the person drawing your blood is not very experienced. There is nothing you can do about it. I’m the same way.
If you are dehydrated, it’s hard to find a vein to draw blood, so drinking water would only help in that situation.

  12. Some people have difficult veins to reach. It isn’t a question of having enough water — you have plenty of blood to keep flowing through all your veins. They couldn’t get the needle into your vein, that is why blood wouldn’t come out. This could be because your veins are very deep (either due to a lot of muscle or a little extra fat), or they are very small (if you are a small person you probably have small veins). Another thing that can cause problems is scarring in people who have blood drawn a lot or who use IV drugs. I’m not suggesting you are a drug-user, I’m just being complete in my answer! Anyway, sometimes people are just hard to stick in certain locations, and easier in others. Some people have better luck getting the blood drawn in a different place in their arm or in the back of their hand. So, in a nutshell, there are a lot of reasons, but it shouldn’t have to do with how much water you drink. (though water is good for you, of course!)

  13. your veins probably roll….mine do, I don’t let them poke at me..look in the crook of your elbow. ( I use my left arm always.) the outside edge should have a good vein…) if not…then let them use the back of your hand, BABY/BUTTERFLY needle. (cause it hurts there…) if she still can’t do it..ask for another vampire…some are better than others…
It has NOTHING to do with water…water doesn’t make your veins plump….it makes your skin plump of you have too much and swell up…

  14. this happened to me once.
i was dehydrated. i need more water.
    so your friend was right.
since you didnt have much water in your system it was harder for the blood to come out.

  15. Its not you its the nurse, she did’nt get a blood vessel. most know what their doing.

  16. I suspect you are playing us. The only way you would not get any blood to come out is if she never got the needle in a
vein; or if she didn’t know what she was doing in the first place. Water is not why you have blood although it is good for you.

Sounds freaky!!! Maybe you are dead!!!ooooooo

  18. She couldn’t find a vein. She might be new or you just might have skinny veins. I’ve had blood taken several times and this is always a problem for me and it’s also been a problem for other members of my family.
I wouldn’t worry about it. You probably won’t have to have anymore blood taken for years. Or, just start lifting weights and the veins will be more promenade. More water in your system isn’t going to do anything but make you have to go to the bathroom more.

  19. well for starters are you sure that the nurse actually went for the vein and didnt just stick that needle. other than that i cant think of anything else. or maybe the nurse injected it into a muscle.

  20. yes you could be dehydrated or in need of a different nurse. ;) before you go to get your blood drawn again drink more water starting the day before and youll be ok. but it sounds like you need more water today as well.

  21. Saint Lucipher

the solution to the problem is simple … you need to slap that nurse around until she gets it right

  22. water does affect being able to get at your veins. make sure you drink lots of water the day before and the day of the blood test. being cold can also make your veins “hide”. wear a sweater before the needle, it may help a little.
