Can I Still Go To School To Be An Rn If I Have A Dui On My Background Check?

I have looked into some schools in the VA area (Roanoke) about CRN, etc programs and have found that they will conduct a background check. Can I still be a nurse with a DUI conviction on my background check?

  1. What they’re looking for are violent crimes, like assault, or something like theft. I knew a CNA who was training to be an RN, who’d had more than one DUI.

  2. Yes, and you shouldn’t let it stand in your way. Get going as we need all the nurses we can get. When asked, explain it as a one time lesson, that has been learned. Something that you took the good from the bad and have made sure the bad will never be again, but only the good. People understand, but you will need to explain in detail on your applications, assuming that they do a back ground check via public records. DUI’s are only a misdemeanor and don’t keep you from going to school.

  3. Sure, why not? Just say that you made a mistake and things have changed, your whole life has changed, and it won’t happen again.

They are looking for things that will make them be concerned about you possibly abusing or assulting a patient, or problems with drug addiction. You should be fine.

  5. Yes, just have a good explanation and prove that it was isolated and that your lesson has been learned.
